Every Diabetics Travel Checklist with Dr. Temi

Published: 28 Aug 2025, Author: Pippa Judge

Travelling with diabetes isn’t just about packing, it’s about being prepared for anything. Missed connection, lost luggage, time zone jumps, or even tech failures can throw off your routine in seconds. This list was carefully compiled by Dr. Temi, an experienced traveller with Type 1 who knows first-hand what it is like to manage blood sugars whilst abroad. Every item on this list is here for a reason, because at some point, it made the difference between a smooth trip and a crisis.

Diabetes Carry-on Essentials: Pack Like Your Life Depends on It

  • Insulin (vials, pens etc)  - and more than you think you’ll need

  • Insulin pump supplies (cannulas, pods etc)

  • Needles Device controller (PDM etc)

  • Blood glucose monitor + extra testing strips and lancets

  • Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM)

  • Patches (for CGM & pump)

  • Insulin cooling wallet

  • Sharps disposable container (travel size)

  • Snacks

  • Glucose tablets or gels

  • Written prescription

  • Doctor’s note (printed AND digital)

  • Chargers & Batteries

Essential Travel Rules for Diabetics:

  • Always carry medication in your hand luggage and never in the hold to prevent destruction of insulin and loss of medication

  • You are entitled to bring a medical bag on board, separate from and in addition to your carry on allowance - confirm with your airline prior to flying though, and print out their confirmation to take with you

  • Pack extras of EVERYTHING - better safe than sorry!

  • If you’re on a pump, pack spare pumps & pens, if you’re on CGM pack spares & BG monitor. 1.5-2x should do.

  • Have digital and printed copies of prescriptions and doctor’s notes

  • Remember to change your time zones on all devices once you’ve landed

  • Stay hydrated and keep snacks accessible at all times

Diabetes doesn’t stop you from seeing the world, but it does require you to be your own best advocate. With this checklist, you’re not just travelling prepared, you’re travelling empowered.

So just go ahead - book that flight, chase that adventure, and own every step of your journey!
